KMBS CONTROL TOWER TOUR

Wednesday, MAY 1st from 4-5pm.

We will spend about 30 minutes in the radar room, and about 30 min in the top of the tower.  The size of the rooms limits us to 6-8 people on a tour at a time.

The tour is LIMITED to 8 max, so first come, first served.  If we get more than 8, then I will arrange a second tour date.

It was requested that I provide names ahead of time to shorten the sign in time, so if you’re interested, let me know ASAP!

Thanks,
Scott

Date Set - Informal Ground School

Well, the results (most of them) are in, and it appears that the best day and time for the Informal Ground School (IGS) sessions would be Sunday afternoons.  I realize that doesn't always work for everybody, but we are all very busy people and the majority rules.

With that as background, I would like to hold an upcoming IGS on Sunday, February 10, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  Following are pertinent details:

PRINCIPAL TOPIC:  Scenario-based VFR Cross Country Flight (for the $100 burger or sushi)

CONCEPT AGENDA:  We will plan all aspects of the proposed XC flight, including gathering information pertaining to the weather, airports involved, routes of flight, use of Flight Service, calculation of time, distance, and fuel use (we will utilize sectional charts and the E6B), and much more.  Participants should come fully prepared!

In addition to planning the flight, we will undertake a "virtual flight" which will allow for the opportunity to make calculation corrections, discuss radio techniques, obtain inflight wx updates, address certain emergency procedures, review airspace issues, and deviate to an alternate airport.

This will not be a lecture style session.  Instead, each of the attendees will be expected and encouraged to actively participate in all discussion items.

LOCATION:  The IGS will be held at 3CM either at the Admin Building (red brick) or the Pilots' Lounge, adjacent to the large blue hangar.

AMENITIES:  Pizza will be provided; soft drinks may be brought or purchased through the vending machine near the Pilots' Lounge.

OPPORTUNITIES to FLY:  Weather and aircraft availability permitting, there will be opportunities for participants to fly before and/or after the session.

VERY IMPORTANT:  In order to have enough seats and pizza, it is imperative that anyone wanting to attend must commit by sending an affirmative message to me by no later than Friday February 8.

Thank you in advance for your interest in aviation learning.  Please let me know of any questions.

The classroom portion is FREE!!!!

Informal Ground School Sessions

I'm in the process of putting together another series of informal ground school sessions for Private Pilots to be held throughout this winter and spring at 3CM, James Clements Airport in Bay City.  Since I have flown with all of you, I would like to schedule times and agenda materials that will fit your schedules and needs.

To that end, I am requesting a couple of pieces of information from all of you.  First, please reply to this message with times and days of the week (including week-ends) that A.) Might work best for you and B.) That definitely will not work for you.  Second, a few of the topics I have in mind include;

1.) Discussion of various required maneuvers
2.) Review of traffic patterns
3.) Radio protocol
4.) Use of the E6B Flight Computer
5.) Chart and navigation processes
6.) Weather services and impacts on flight.

Please review these and let me know if there are other items you might want to cover in more detail.

Sessions will likely be held monthly at a set time and day (e.g., 2nd Saturday from 9 to 11 am), as consistent as possible with your collective input.  My intent is to cover no more than one of the topics in a session lasting no longer than 2 hours.  Additionally, I am inviting other individuals (students and pilots) to join us for what I hope will be robust discussions.  The format of the sessions will NOT be lecture!  Instead I plan to use scenario-based approaches to cover the material in order to allow for a more free-flowing dialogue by all involved.

I'd like to have a first session in early February, so please reply to me as soon as you are able.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Welcome!!!!

Do you look up towards the sky when you hear an airplane overhead?

You are not alone, so do we!

Have you often wanted to go flying but do not have access to an airplane?

We are busy creating a flying club to take care of that problem!
Have you ever had the dream of becoming a pilot?

If you have the will, we have the way to give you the wings you are missing!

Have you had health issues in the past and you felt that you would not be able to pass your medical so you just gave up flying?

Did you know that if you have never been denied an FAA medical, there are light sport aircraft (LSA's) such as the Piper Cub below that you can fly, and take a passenger!

Would you like to learn a skill that less than 10% of the US population have?

It's true, not many people have this skill.  Be part of the minority that experiences the magic of flying.

WARNING:  You may be hooked for life!

Are you a pilot and would like to meet others who share your passion?

Then the Grassroots Aviators may be right for you!  We are a group of aviators all over the US that share the same passion and want to meet you!  We are a group with a common interest made up of flight attendants, student pilots, private pilots, flight instructors, mechanics and professional pilots who have not forgotten our roots.  We engage in fly-ins, fly-outs, camping etc and would love to have you join our club!

If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, then the GRA Flying Club may be right for you!
